The Story

How I Got Here

I didn't set out to specialize in entertainment. A referral put me in the door of a business management firm, and what I found there changed how I thought about this work. Business management — the kind done for actors, musicians, directors, and writers — is not standard accounting. It's not filing a return and moving on. It's understanding how someone's income is structured, how their career creates financial risk, and how to build a plan that accounts for the years when things are good and the years when they aren't. It's thinking several steps ahead at all times.

I spent years doing that work across multiple business management and boutique accounting firms in the Los Angeles area. The clients included actors, musicians, directors, and writers — people whose income was tied directly to their talent and their name. Learning to plan around that kind of financial life changes how you think about every client after.

What I kept seeing — regardless of who the client was — is that the people who came in overwhelmed left with clarity. Not because their situation changed. Because someone finally slowed it down, organized the moving parts, and explained what actually mattered.

"It's not just filing returns. It's reducing uncertainty for people who already carry enough on their shoulders."

That's still what this work is about for me. I started RM Financial & Tax Advisors to do it on my own terms — with a focused client list, a real advisory relationship, and a CPA who actually knows your file leading every engagement.

Why This Niche

Why Content Creators and Equity Professionals

The financial profile of a content creator isn't that different from the entertainment clients I spent years serving. Irregular income. A personal brand that functions as a business. Revenue from multiple sources that needs to be structured carefully. The platform is new. The problems aren't.

Stock-compensated professionals carry a different kind of complexity — equity that vests on a schedule, tax events that happen whether you're ready or not, and a planning window that closes whether or not you used it. Most generalist CPAs handle the aftermath. I'd rather be involved before the decisions get made.

Both of these clients share something important: they've built real income and real financial stakes, and they deserve a CPA who treats their situation with the same seriousness they do.

How I Think

I've Always Been a Planner

By nature I'm someone who saves and plans ahead. That's not a professional credential — it's just how I'm wired. Tax advisory suits that temperament well because good tax planning isn't reactive. It requires looking several steps ahead, considering approaches that aren't obvious, and making decisions in January that protect you in April.

I also invest personally — in real estate, in options, in assets that require the same kind of multi-variable thinking I apply to client work. That's not a coincidence. I'm drawn to situations where preparation and strategy create outcomes that luck alone doesn't.

"Good tax planning isn't about finding loopholes. It's about understanding the full picture early enough to do something about it."
What Working With Me Looks Like

What You Can Expect

When you work with RM Financial & Tax Advisors, you work directly with me — Ruben A. Martinez, CPA. Every return, every planning meeting, every question that comes in through the client portal. I'm the one who knows your file, year after year.

I work with a focused number of clients intentionally. That's not a limitation — it's how I make sure every engagement gets the attention it deserves. Advisory work done right requires knowing your client's situation well enough to be proactive. That's only possible if the list stays manageable.

Every return I prepare comes with a personal video walkthrough — recorded specifically for you — explaining what was filed, the decisions made, and anything worth planning around in the year ahead. Most clients say it's the first time a tax return actually made sense to them.

I serve clients in both English and Spanish. Complex financial conversations shouldn't lose anything in translation.

A Real Moment

What This Work Actually Looks Like

I was reviewing my notes from a prospect call not long ago. It started the way many do — filled with uncertainty. You could hear it in their voice. They weren't sure if their entity structure was right. They weren't confident they were maximizing retirement. They felt behind and overwhelmed — unsure of what they didn't know.

As we walked through their situation step by step, something shifted. When you slow things down. When you organize the moving parts. When you explain what actually matters — and what doesn't — the noise quiets. By the end of the call, their tone had completely changed. More relaxed. Clearer. Even over the phone, I could tell they were smiling.

That's the value I'm trying to bring to every engagement. Not just compliance. Not just returns. Clarity — for people who are building something real and deserve to understand where they stand.
